Housing developers have received approval letters that permit construction of new apartment complexes around the city of Mount Vernon, according to a report by LoHud.com.

The Mount Vernon Zoning Board of Appeals informed four developers they have received zoning changes that were critical to allow the construction of denser multifamily residences, LoHud reported here.

The zoning board sent Jan. 18 approval letters to architect Tom Abillama for three projects he represents, including Fleetwood Terrace, a 44-unit complex at 16 E. Broad St., the site of the former Fleetwood Animal Hospital, according to LoHud.

Much of the land at 16 E. Broad St. occupied a zoning area that only allows single-family homes. The proposed six-story complex is envisioned to have 46 off-street parking spots.

Abillama was informed that North High Development was approved for The Millennial at 135 N. High St., a six-story luxury-rental building with 24 units. The building at 135 N. High St. was most recently used as a church and it was the former location of Jonas Brothers Studios, Inc.

224 Gramatan LLC was approved for a proposed 53-unit complex at 214 Gramatan Ave. called the Parkview Terrace. The eight-story complex would have retail on the ground floor that replaces a strip of businesses destroyed in a fire on Oct. 19, 2015.

In all three cases, the zoning board's resolutions stated there would be no substantial changes to the surrounding neighborhoods in the three areas because they already were predominantly multifamily residential, according to LoHud.
