THORNWOOD, N.Y. Gas prices around the state are rising in the home stretch of summer, and residents in Mount Pleasant may begin seeing numbers approaching $4 per gallon for regular grade.
Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com, said prices in New York recently experienced a major spike. Over the past two weeks, the state average has risen about 20 cents per gallon for regular. As of Friday, the state average price for regular was $3.91 a gallon.
About a month and a half ago, gas prices around Mount Pleasant were on the decline, with the average price being about $3.75 a gallon for regular. Since then they have been on a steady incline. At the Citgo station on Commerce Street in Thornwood, the price for regular on Thursday was $3.97 per gallon. Some stations in Hawthorne have gone well above the state average over the past week. At the Valero on Saw Mill River Road in Hawthorne, gas prices on Thursday were about $4.19 a gallon for regular.
The state average has been on the rise since it bottomed out around the Fourth of July after hitting a yearly high of about $4.13 per gallon in early April. DeHaan said the reason for the increase in price recently is the rising price of crude oil, which is about $94 per barrel now.
In comparison, residents of Mount Pleasant have it better than their neighbors. In nearby Armonk, the price for regular grade has averaged around $4.50 per gallon over the past week.
Hope is on the horizon though, DeHaan said, although it may not be for another few months.
Historically the prices tend to stay high toward the end of summer and usually will start to decrease by the end of September before they bottom out around Thanksgiving and Christmas, DeHaan said.
