In Case You Missed It: Hawthorne's Berlin Imports Closes After 40 Years

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. -- Berlin Imports, a popular distributor of beer, soda and miscellaneous party treats at 648 Commerce St., closed in October with little fanfare.

A vacant lot and tire tracks of disappointed former customers tells the tale of Berlin Imports, which closed after more than 40 years on Commerce Street in Hawthorne.

Tire tracks in this week's snow signalled how many disappointed customers have been turned away by locked doors during the high-volume holiday season.

The store owner posted updates on closing out sales during the fall at this web site.

Reached at his business phone number on Thursday, Thomas Chenet, the operator of Berlin Imports, said, "Everything is up in the air. We're still looking."

"Presently nothing is happening. (We) have some feelers out there looking,'' Chenet said.

Chenet added that he'll "be making a decision after the holidays."

The building's landlord reportedly died and the family put the property up for sale, according to a neighboring business owner.

Apparently, an electrical contractor may have purchased the building.
