PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. ? Reading a review on a book jacket or on a website is totally different from getting a first-hand opinion, says the owner of The Village Bookstore in Pleasantville.
"I think a lot of reasons why certain books are more popular than others is from word-of-mouth," Yvonne van Cort said. "People hear from friends and people around town that a certain book is good and you want to go read it. It's a lot of personal reviews."
This holiday season, van Cort said, there are books that have been flying off the shelves in the local bookstore on Washington Avenue that don't necessarily have any connection to the holidays.
Five of the most popular, she said, are "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney, "The Last Lion" by William Manchester and Paul Reid, "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn, "Elsewhere" by Richard Russo and "Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power" by Jon Meacham.
Van Cort said that the staff at The Village Bookstore are more than that when it comes to recommending a gift for holiday shoppers.
"We have a wonderful staff here that loves to read," van Cort said. "I think that's why 'Roundhouse' [by Louise Erdrich] has been popular, because our staff read it and really adored it."
The Village Bookstore also has children's Christmas books and calendars and offers gift wrapping.
The Village Bookstore will be open this weekend on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
