ColumbiaDoctors Helps Women Tackle Common, Yet Uncomfortable, Disorder

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Despite one in three women suffering from pelvic floor disorders, many are unsure how to address the extremely personal malady. However, thanks to the specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian and ColumbiaDoctors in Scarsdale, patients can receive information, support and treatment options at an informational discussion this month.

"There are three common types of pelvic floor disorders," said Dr. Ladin Yurteri-Kaplan, assistant professor of OBGYN at Columbia University Medical Center. "Women can suffer from prolapse, as well as urinary and fecal incontinence, also know as accidental bowel leakage." In most cases those suffering from prolapse may notice a bulge or protrusion from the vagina or with incontinence may have accidental bowel movements and urine leakage.

"This is more common in the older patient population, but one in three women means it's very common," said Yurteri-Kaplan. "There is often a general lack of knowledge, and most women just deal with it in private since these are very sensitive topics."

When it comes to treatment, no two cases should be addressed the same. "All three disorders involve a spectrum of causes," said Yurteri-Kaplan. "It's important to know there are many different treatment options and it is critical to go to a doctor who can provide you with all the options.” She stresses the importance of talking your doctor and being comfortable with the treatment you choose.

"It’s a very common disorder, but there's not just one treatment option," said Yurteri-Kaplan. "At ColumbiaDoctors Obstetrics & Gynecology at Scarsdale we cater the treatment to the patient." The first step is education, and Dr. Yurteri-Kaplan and Dr. Cara Grimes will host an educational discussion on pelvic floor disorders on Nov. 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at ColumbiaDoctors Obstetrics & Gynecology at 696 White Plains Road in Scarsdale.

"I encourage women, even if they don’t want an intervention, just to learn about the problem," said Yurteri-Kaplan. "These disorders impact a patient's quality of life, and getting education about what is out there is important. At ColumbiaDoctors, we treat the patient with patient centered treatment plans assuring patients are involved in the decision making each step of the way."
