According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms. "In a fire, seconds count," said Hawthorne Fire Company Chief Joseph LaGrippo. "Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out." The Hawthorne Fire Department will be visiting area schools and businesses during Fire Prevention Week to promote "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!"
Additionally, the department will be hosting an open house, at the firehouse at 25 Home St., Hawthorne. The open house will be held between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mount Pleasant residents are invited to visit the firehouse, participate in public safety activities and demonstrations, and meet their local volunteers. Kids will enjoy interactive educational activities, play areas and fire truck rides.
Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn more about the importance of working smoke alarms and testing them monthly.
