"Wildlife Matters: Creating Landscapes that Sustain Nature," will explore how to enhance gardens to attract and sustain birds, butterflies, bees, and other native creatures. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the college, 75 Grasslands Road Valhalla. Snow date is March 18.

Douglas W. Tallamy, an entomologist and author of the influential book Bringing Nature Home, will open with a look at the challenges wildlife face due to fragmented natural areas throughout the country — and how altering the way we landscape can reverse the trend.

Stephen W. Kress, an ornithologist with the National Audubon Society and author of several books on gardening for birds, will examine how to provide for the year-round needs of different bird species.

Other topics include planting for bees and other pollinators and designing a butterfly garden.
