Westchester Students Organize 'March For Our Lives' To Combat Gun Violence

In the wake of dozens of successful walkouts by students in Westchester last week to call on Congress for tighter gun control laws, students are now organizing a countywide “March for Our Lives” movement.

Thousands of Westchester residents are expected to participate in a “sibling march” beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 in White Plains, which is being organized by students throughout the county.

According to White Plains High School senior Kelly Marx, who is one of the lead student organizers for the Westchester County March For Our Lives, more than 3,000 members of the community are expected to join students at the march, which will kick off at Post Road Elementary and make its way to the White Plains Public Library.

A rally will follow the event at 2 p.m. next to the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue behind the White Plains Public Library, featuring remarks from student activists.

Organizers noted that the march is one of hundreds happening around the country planned by students in solidarity with survivors of gun violence. “The purpose of the march is to call on lawmakers to make students’ lives and well-being a priority and to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.”

“It is time to stop gun violence from tearing up communities,” Marx, 18, said. “As a teenager, I realize how powerful my voice is, and that this is our time to speak out about a cause that is very important to me because it should not be affecting every individual in the United States. This is our future that we are fighting for, the future for the next generations too.”
