SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Women living in Westchester and surrounding counties now have access to the top-rated obstetricians and gynecologists of ColumbiaDoctors without having to travel to Manhattan.

A new practice offers patients everything from preventative care and routine exams, to infertility treatment, prenatal care, management of obstetrics complications and even consultative, preoperative, and postoperative services for minimally invasive surgery to treat various conditions, such as fibroids and endometriosis. Dr. Anna Burgansky , Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center leads the team.

The new ColumbiaDoctors practice in Scarsdale includes five physicians, who provide general obstetric and gynecologic care, two gynecologic specialty surgeons, and a reproductive endocrinologist who can help with hormonal issues, infertility evaluation and treatment. Although ultrasound and many procedures can be conducted right in the office, patients who require hospitalization can be seen nearby at NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville where Dr. Burgansky serves as Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Burgansky has championed improvements in quality assurance and patient safety throughout her career and is continuing to do so at the Scarsdale practice and at NYP/Lawrence. A proponent of simulation training, she recently coordinated a hospital-wide training on obstetrical hemorrhage. She also serves on the sub-committee for the Safe Motherhood Initiative, a national initiative to reduce maternal childbirth-related death.

“In my opinion, simulation training is one of best ways for physicians to practice their skills and become more confident in managing complications that occur infrequently, but carry serious risks for the patient. Obstetric hemorrhage, emergency C-section and eclamptic seizure are just some of the examples. Simulation practice also improves team work and communication, so things run smoothly and efficiently during a real-life emergency,” said Dr. Burgansky.

She has conducted simulation training where physicians can practice maneuvers on manikin models to improve outcomes in cases of difficult delivery complicated by a shoulder dystocia.

“At NYP/Lawrence, our goal is to have a healthy mother and a healthy baby entering and leaving our hospital,” she said. As part of the Safe Motherhood Initiative, she focuses on standardizing management of the three most common complications associated with maternal death: high blood pressure in pregnancy, hemorrhage related to delivery, and blood clots. “We must standardize our approach in prevention and management of these complications, so that we have equally good outcomes whether the patient is cared for in a community hospital or a large academic center.”
