Few smells wafting from a kitchen get mouths watering and tummies rumbling faster than bacon sizzling in a frying pan.
And fewer side dishes have been concocted into so many off-label uses, undergone international shortages and experienced price spikes higher than shrimp and steak.
International Bacon Day 2016 is Saturday, Sept. 3 and this is the time to indulge in every variety, from straight-up fried, chocolate covered, shrimp-wrapped, toothpaste, sunscreen, even lip balm and body wash.
It's not surprising International Bacon Day is celebrated annually on the Saturday before Labor Day, just in time for a three-day weekend of indulgence.
Bacon lovers can thank Oscar Mayer for packaging the first strips of cured, smoked pork in 1924, although the actual celebration day was launched in 2000 in Bedford, Mass., according to Punchbowl.com. But who started it, no one knows for sure.
