April is National Donate Life Month, and LiveOnNY and Northern Westchester Hospital are partnering to encourage the community to register as an organ donor, and to celebrate those who have saved lives through the gift of donation.

According to LiveOnNY, an organization dedicated to promoting organ donation awareness in New York, 9 out of 10 New Yorkers support organ donation, but only 25 percent of New Yorkers are registered. Sadly, more than 18 people die daily in the United States while waiting to receive an organ transplant. New York residents have yet to embrace the challenge; only 22 percent of state residents over the age of 18 are listed on the organ donation registry, compared to the national average of 47 percent. One organ donor can save up to 8 lives and improve up to 50 lives.

Northern Westchester Hospital has been committed to raising awareness of the need for organ donors. On Donor Enrollment Day in the Fall, NWH won the award for Most Enrollments by a Hospital without Transplant Service. Recently the Hospital launched a campaign, “It’s Beautiful,” to make the point that organ donation can save so many lives.
