Stacy Geisinger of StacyKnows asked expert Sarah Hodgson of The Doggy Mommy for advice on when it is time to say goodbye to her dog Sophie. The soon-to-be 16-year-old can hardly see or hear and appears to be suffering from "doggyheimers."
Hodsgon offered tips on dog incontinence, separation anxiety and more.
First, Hodgson stressed the distinction between an older dog being unable to hold it all in due to an aging bladder and one that stands shaking and confused while emptying their bladder on the floor. The latter could have an infection, kidney issue or fading quality of life.
Playing music can help a dog with separation anxiety. A 5-10 play period in the morning and evening with bones, puzzle toys, walks and modified games of fetch and kickball can also elevate and ease an aging dog's spirit.
The emotionally-charged subject of pricey and sometimes extreme medical treatments received no definitive answer, because everyone's lives and financial situations are different. Veterinarians will always suggest tests and treatments due to an oath to keep patients comfortable and alive.
Hodgson revealed that she would personally make the call for euthanasia when her dog is visibly suffering, such as when her tail no longer wags and when food no longer excites her.
