“Red is a very powerful color,’’ said Kimberly Scappaticci, a Wallauer’s Design Center Color specialist. “It can be used as a canvas, and when doing so everything else in the room will be accentuated and become the focal points. A warm red creates a coziness great for dining rooms where people gather for family time. Red can also be the accent color works well with blues, grays, and greens even if using the color in a floral arrangement Red will give just enough pop to make the room interesting.

The holiday season for sure inspires every shade of red, from the deep, robust red to a rich, bold, ruby red. Wallauer’s carries Benjamin Moore Paints and offers a wide range of red alternatives. “New London Burgundy,” for instance, can make large rooms seem cozy and also works well in small spaces, such as powder rooms. “Ravishing Red” is a bold saturated hue, and part of Benjamin Moore's Color Trend 2016 collection. This color is sure to bring energy to a room and is very powerful when purposely used with black and white.

"Caliente", a ruby red color by Benjamin Moore, is a stimulating lively hue that can be used on one wall in a room as an accent or as “pops” of color in fabrics or accessories. Add white to red, and you have a pinkish-red such as "Gypsy Love" by Benjamin Moore. It can be used in teenage rooms, as well as living and dining rooms when building a sophisticated country style. “Radicchio,” which is in the berry family by Benjamin Moore, is a strong, deep color that keeps a traditional warm welcome, making large rooms with a lot of molding feel soothing and cozy.

Using color can be a balancing act. Too much will overwhelm a room, and too little will not offer the accent that pulls a room together. “You need to proportionalize color ,’’ Scappaticci said. “A good rule is use 10-30-60 proportions. 10 percent for accessories, 30 percent for an accent that enhances the overall color and 60 percent, which is the main color. Your eyes, whether you realize it or not, will see it proportionally. A lot of people like to use white or beige as a main color, which is fine if you have complement colors that make the environment interesting.”
