VALHALLA, N.Y. – Valhalla High School senior Brandon Agins' internship with a local security company has sparked a new career in high-tech electronic work.

Agins works part-time with Valhalla-based Security World, Inc. on weekday afternoons. His job involves a mix of electronics, from alarms to computers to cameras. It's the variety of high-tech products that has Agins thinking about making this his career.

“It's all new,” he said, noting that the security business is always improving and advancing so that new products are always coming in. “It's pretty cool to be introduced to stuff like that.”

In addition to his electrical work, Agins plays a lot of sports, goes to the gym and has a side job at So Dam Hot. He admits his life is very busy.

“I've always got something to do,” he said. “It keeps me occupied. I don't think I could stay home and sit home all day.”

Agins also takes part in the Southern Westchester BOCES Electrical Construction program on Friday, where he has learned electrical work involved in home construction and repair.

“It clicked with me,” he said. “I always enjoyed it. My dad is an electrician. Watching him do his work made me interested in it. I think picked up pretty quickly on this, and I have a lot of fun doing it.”

His favorite aspect of working with electricity is the knowledge he's gained about how everything works behind the scenes.

“Some people they might look at a light switch and say 'Oh you just flip the switch and the light goes on,” but there's so much more behind it,” he said.
