Ex-Hawthorne Medical Technician, Monk Dies at 83

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. – Dorly Monk, a retired medical technician and former Hawthorne resident, died Oct. 21 at the age of 83. A funeral service will be held on Monday. 

Monk was born on Feb. 16, 1928 in Basel, Switzerland to the late Dr. Fridolin and Augusta Kern Spieler. She immigrated to Stamford, Conn. in 1952 and moved to Hawthorne in 1963.

She went on to work as a medical technician at St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains, until her retirement in 1991 when she moved to Somers. Most recently living in Chappaqua, Monk enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, gardening and traveling. She especially loved spending time with her family and close friends. 

Surviving are her son Peter Scherrer and his wife Debbie of Yorktown, her daughter Doreen Welburn and her husband Dru of Chappaqua, her sister Margrit Boolukos of Maryland, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husbands Dr. Friedrich P. Scherrer and George B. Monk, her brother Fritz Spieler and her sister Elisabeth Vogel.

Friends may visit family from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Hawthorne Funeral Home. The funeral mass will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel in Hawthorne, followed by entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
