The Hawthorne author and journalist first began writing “No Never No More” around 2000 in his late 20s while living in New York City. He finally published it in April.
“I really, really wanted to try a novel and wrote this one under a different title,” he said. “I had an agent, a lot of near misses and didn't end up publishing it. Finally a year ago, I went through it, cleaned it up, gave it a new title and got it done.”
Malone has written for The New York Times, Westchester Magazine and The Journal News. He's currently covering the television industry for Broadcasting and Cable magazine. He also runs the blog trainjotting.com and writes weekly tasting columns for Captain Lawrence's Brewery in Elmsford. He moved to Westchester County with his wife and two kids about six years ago.
“No Never No More” follows a New York City man as he seeks to improve various relationships in his life and complete several goals before his 30th birthday. It's set in the late 1990s.
Malone's first attempts at publication went awry when one of his agents went into the film business. His second agent shopped the book around to half a dozen places, but didn't get anywhere. The second agent would later quit the business.
“He moved to California and became an illustrator, and I didn't get published,” Malone said. “Then life just kind of intervened.”
Malone started a family and moved to Westchester, finishing two other novels and publishing a non-fiction book that stemmed from his trainjotting site: “The New York Commuter's Glossary.” He began revising his first novel about a year ago.
“It just always bugged me that I didn't get the thing published,” he said.
Malone published his book under his own Well Lit Books imprint and says the reception so far has been good. He hopes to publish the rest of the trilogy in the coming years.
“It's a little scary,” he said. “I've done a trillion journalism clips and that doesn't make me nervous, but putting yourself out there in fiction, I think it's scary.”
