Last December, Ted Sabety was doing radiation and chemotherapy for head and neck cancer. On Thursday, he was performing live on stage with his band, Ted Sabety and the New Irrelevants, at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Sleepy Hollows 15th Annual Cancer Survivor Celebration.
The 53-year-old Pleasantville resident loves the outdoors and enjoys hiking and kayaking. Sabety discovered that he had cancer in his head and neck after he sustained a foot injury kayaking on the Hudson River and it got infected. He had a swollen limph node for a while that he ignored but the doctor told him if his limph node was still swollen after a dose of antibiotics he would be referred to another doctor. A trip to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center confirmed his diagnosis with a biopsy.
It was one of the most difficult things Ive ever been through in my life, Sabety said. But then I found out that one of my clients went through something much worse than mine and I considered myself lucky.
Sabety is an intellectual property lawyer at the law firm he founded, Sabety & Associates, in New York City. He previously worked in studio production with bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Run-DMC.
I was so impressed with the attention to detail, the speed and systematic nature which they got me into surgery and the sympathy I received from the nurses at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in Sleepy Hollow, Sabety said. They made you feel like they really care.
Going forward, Sabety will continue to receive a series of CAT scans to check that hes cancer-free.
It takes a long time to know youve beaten it, Sabety said. But Im on the right trajectory.
