Valhalla Nurse Recognized For Compassionate Work

VALHALLA, N.Y. – Jean Soriano helps children every day who are receiving treatment at the Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla. Last week, the registered nurse received a prestigious national award for her work, after two of her patients’ mothers nominated her.

“Jean is a role-model for all nurses,” one mother wrote in her nomination letter. “She has the utmost respect for both patient and parent. I mostly live in the hospital by my son’s bedside but if I leave having Jean as his nurse is a comfort.” The mother's name was not released by the hospital.

Soriano received the DAISY Award, given by The DAISY Foundation (the acronym stands for Diseases Against Immune Systems). The award recognizes nurses across the country for compassionate work that nurses do on a daily basis.

Soriano has worked at the Blythedale Children’s Hospital since 1989 and currently works in the Pediatric and Adolescent Unit. She also serves as a teacher for nurses who are recently hired. Soriano lives in White Plains with her husband and two children. Before joining the Blythedale staff, she worked as a nurse in the Philippines and Austria.

Maureen Desimone, the chief operating officer at Blythedale, said Soriano’s work reflects the value of the hospital and the hospital is pleased to have her on staff and honor her with this recognition.

“We are proud to recognize Jean for the exceptional care she provides to patients and their families,” Desimone said.

Nurses may be nominated for a DAISY Award by hospital staff, co-workers, patients or family members of patients. Winners are selected each year by a committee based on a number of criteria, including compassionate care, resolution of patient care challenges and inspiration.
