Volunteers Pitch In to Beautify Mount Pleasant

THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Do you like the new clock towers in Thornwood and Hawthorne? You should thank the volunteer committees and groups that are toiling to improve Mount Pleasant.

“It’s wonderful that they can focus on tangible things throughout the town and get them done,” Mount Pleasant Town Supervisor Joan Maybury said.

The Mount Pleasant Beautification Committee plays a major role in the upkeep of the town. It collected more than $50,000 in donations from residents and local businesses to install the two new clock towers.

The beautification committee also teamed with the Chamber of Commerce to put in new welcome signs at each hamlet – Thornwood, Hawthorne and Valhalla. The annual town cleanup day was another success, with the beautification committee working with the Thornwood Lions Club to organize the sixth annual event. Many local groups such as Boy Scouts and AYSO soccer pitched in to help.

Town Board member Carl Fulgenzi, who is also a member of the Thornwood Lions Club, salutes the beautification committee and other volunteer organizations for all the work they do to improve Mount Pleasant.

“It says a lot about the town and the people that live here,” Fulgenzi said. “You can never get enough volunteers, and it’s very admirable of them.”

The town board honored local residents Marisa Farrell, Joane Piazza, Natalie Gjokaj and Sabrina Rich as key members of the beautification committee.

Maybury said she hopes that volunteer work will continue to help Mount Pleasant.

“We look forward to many more of their projects in the future,” she said.
