A New and Familiar Night at Hawthorne Elementary

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – For Hawthorne Elementary School Principal Jerome Schulman, Back to School Night on Thursday evening marked a new beginning with some familiar faces.

"It's exciting, it's good to see some familiar parents from other schools and it gives us a great sense of community," Schulman said.

Schulman, previously the principal of Westlake Middle School, is in his first year as principal of Hawthorne Elementary. Thursday marked the first event that Schulman had the opportunity to interact with the parents of his new students.

Schulman said he was excited for the parents, especially the new ones, to become familiar with Hawthorne Elementary. Each parent was given a half hour to attend their child's class and meet their teacher. Parents were then given the opportunity to explore some of the various special programs within the school, such as art, music, and computers.

Valerie Catarina, of Valhalla, was at Back to School Night for her second grade daughter, Charlotte. Catarina had previous children pass through the Mount Pleasant Central School District and was familiar and excited for what Schulman will bring to Hawthorne.

"I think it's good that he's here as the new principal, I think he's going to bring a good vibe to the school," Catarinia said.

Although Schulman was glad to be involved with his first Back to School Night as Hawthorne's principal, he admitted the event was not his to shine in.

"Tonight's really not about me, it's about the parents and welcoming them to the school and making sure they get a good overview of their child's education," Schulman said.
