Bacteria ID'd As Cause Of Westchester Food Event Illnesses

VALHALLA, N.Y. – The bacteria that sickened some festival-goers who attended Westchester’s Burger and Beer Bash at Kensico Dam in Valhalla earlier this month has been identified as Campylobacter, the county department of health announced Monday.

The bacteria was identified by testing samples from several people who became ill after the event.  Possible symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and fever.  Most cases of campylobacteriosis are associated with eating raw or undercooked poultry meat or from cross-contamination with other foods.

The symptoms, which usually begin two to five days after consuming the contaminated food, resolve on their own without medication within three to five days – although it can take up to 10 days to recover in some cases, the health department said.

“Anyone who has not already become sick following this event should no longer be at risk,” said Dr. Sherlita Amler, county health commissioner.  “Anyone who continues to have symptoms would contact his or her physician and should not go to work or school until symptoms resolve.”

The June 6 event had 30 food vendors and although the health department is investigating the incident, it said it may not be possible to identify the exact source of the bacteria.
