CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- Watching the riots in Baltimore unfold made it a nerve-wracking Monday night for Chappaqua resident Dawn Dankner-Rosen.

Dankner-Rosen's son, Lucas, is completing his freshman year at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the protests and rioting caused her to be glued to the television.

"The night they had the riot, I didn't know what to do," Dankner-Rosen said. "I was ready to go down there and take him home."

Johns Hopkins was on lockdown and students stayed in their dorms. Dankner-Rosen used a Facebook page for Johns Hopkins parents and received updates from the school. The school is still under a curfew.

"Things seem to have quieted down," Dankner-Rosen said. "He has finals and other responsibilities. He feels safe that he wants to stick it out."

Dankner-Rosen, who runs DDR PR in Pleasantville, will be visiting Washington, D.C. on Sunday for an event and plans to stop in Baltimore to make sure her son is okay.

"He was a little unnerved," Dankner-Rosen said. "It was tense. Baltimore was on fire, it was a scary situation."

Dankner-Rosen, who attended Syracuse University, said she wasn't nervous about sending her son to Baltimore.

"I lived happily in Syracuse," Dankner-Rosen said. "Johns Hopkins is one of the best schools in the country. Baltimore is Baltimore. That kind of thing doesn't bother me."

While at Johns Hopkins, Lucas has been involved in a number of volunteer programs, including helping out at soup kitchens.

"He's been pretty active as a community volunteer, but I've asked him to table that," Dankner-Rosen said. "I'm a nervous mother."

Dankner-Rosen said her son has taken the whole situation in stride.

"He was fine, though he was concerned," Dankner-Rosen said.
