At approximately 2:47 a.m. Sunday, numerous Yonkers Police and Yonkers Fire units responded to the area of Palmer Road and Sunnybrook Road on a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries, police said.

The accident involved two vehicles, a Yonkers Fire Department ladder truck and a suburban, which was occupied only by the driver, police said.

The driver of the suburban was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has been identified as Frank Fernandez, a 45-year-male was a detective with the City of Yonkers Police Department.

Four members of the Yonkers Fire Department who were on the ladder truck were treated and released at a local hospital for minor injuries.

Fernandez had been with the department for 15 years, the last eight as a detective, said Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner, who called Fernandez a "well-respected member of our agency" whose "passing is a major loss to the YPD family."

"During his tenure with the department he served with honor and distinction and was always available to help and support his fellow officers," Gardner said in a statement. "He facilitated several fundraisers for fallen officers and worked tirelessly for many charities including St. Baldrick’s, The Police Unity Tour and the Lt. Roy McLaughlin Scholarship Fund.”

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Members of the Traffic Division, the Detective Division, and the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office are actively investigating this incident at this time.
