THORNWOOD, N.Y. - More than 4,600 customers in Mount Pleasant lost power Monday night as Hurricane Sandy's winds began to blow.

The 4,639 customers without power in the Town of Mount Pleasant was roughly 52 percent of the total customers in the town (8,783), according to Con Edison reports. Authorities said the height of the storm was expected to hit the area later in the evening, but that intermittent power outages could be expected all day Monday and Tuesday. With the strongest winds whipping through the area Monday night, Con Edison officials said many outages would remain until Tuesday.

"At this point, any outages are going to be storm related," said Allan Drury. "We're seeing outages being reported throughout New York City and throughout Westchester."

A restoration time for the power outages in Mount Pleasant was not determined Monday night.

"We're restoring people now and we'll continue to do so as long as conditions are safe for us to be out there," Drury said. "With all of the outages, we will do our best to work as quickly as possible to restore power as long as those repairs can be made safely."
