VALHALLA, N.Y. Gas prices at stations around Mount Pleasant continue to rise, and some residents are fed up with the effects on their wallet.

As of Friday, many stations around Mount Pleasant were selling gas for more than $4 a gallon for regular grade. At the Sunoco on Marble Avenue in Thornwood, the price was $4.29 a gallon. The Lukoil on Broadway in Valhalla was slightly cheaper at $4.19 a gallon. Those prices are about 25 cents higher than the average in town a month ago. The price of regular grade Aug. 20 at many stations was about $3.97 a gallon.
In Pleasantville, it was even pricier, as the BP on Marble Avenue was selling regular for $4.39 a gallon on Friday.
Some Mount Pleasant residents are avoiding New York gas prices all together, where the state average is about $4.15 a gallon. James Collins said he fills up in New Jersey where he works rather than in his hometown of Valhalla. In New Jersey, the state average is $3.76 per gallon.
Boycotting certain local stations because of high prices is an unrealistic solution to the complex problem, said gasoline expert Patrick DeHaan with GasBuddy.com.
Its all a pipe dream because if you say, 'All right, well, were not going to go to this station anymore because its too expensive so well go to another,' DeHaan said. Then the demand of gas at that new station is going to go up and so will the price.
There is only one solution, DeHaan said, and it is an extreme one.
The only way to get them to drop significantly is for Americans to drive less and stay off the road, DeHaan said. But theres not enough people out there who are willing to do that.
