Indian Point Unit 2 Returns To Service

BUCHANAN, N.Y. – Indian Point officials announced that Unit 2 at the nuclear power plant was returned to service on Monday, following a shutdown on Friday to complete weld repairs to a pipe and to allow workers from Con Edison to test a breaker in a switchyard near Indian Point.

The shutdown came about when plant engineers identified a small leak of Hudson River water from a pipe in a nonradioactive system, leaking at about one drop every five seconds. There was no ongoing leak, and there was no challenge to safety; however, the plant needed to be shut down for weld repairs to be completed, in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations, company officials announced last week in a press release from the Indian Point Center.

The breaker can only be tested while electricity from Unit 2 is not being sent to the Con Edison-owned switchyard. Indian Point’s other operating unit, Unit 3, has been online providing electricity continuously for the past 194 days, Con Edison officials said.
