Angelou died at her home in North Carolina, on Wednesday, said her literary agent, Helen Brann. Angelou, 86, had been "frail" and suffering from heart problems, the agent said.

Angelou recited a poem at President Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration and was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2010.

The Mount Pleasant Public Library and the Ossining Library both honored Angelou with displays of her work.

"We're going to be revisiting a lot of her work," John Fearon, director of the Mount Pleasant Library said.

Mary Donnery, director of the Croton Free Library, said she was going to discuss with other librarians about how the library could pay tribute to Angelou.

"I've been a fan of hers for a long time," Donnery said. "I am always glad her work shows up on school reading lists. It's good that younger people are made aware of her and get to experience her. It's really sad, she was such a gifted and talented person."

Donnery said her books remain popular at the library.

U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, (D-Westchester) said she was deeply saddened by Angelou's passing, calling her a personal inspiration.

“Her work was a window into the struggle for equality and a beacon for humanity," Lowey sad. "Dr. Angelou was a living embodiment of the strength that comes from our shared national diversity. While we grieve for her, we will no doubt continue to derive strength from her immortal words."
