Library is Place to be For Those Without Power

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Many in the area have taken to the Mount Pleasant Public Library in Pleasantville for electronic resources as Con Edison continues to restore power following the weekend storm.

Lori Hauser, a Mount Pleasant resident, had her power restored on Tuesday but is still without Internet service.

“It’s been an ordeal but I’ve been fortunate at least that my power came back on Tuesday because I know there are still a lot of people out there that are without it still,” Hauser said.

Hauser was at the library Wednesday with her laptop to use the library’s free Wi-Fi.  She said that she frequently visits the library to take out books but that it was the first time she visited specifically to use the Internet.  Hauser said her service provider told her it could be until Sunday before her Internet is restored.

John Fearon, director at the library, said there was a trend following major storms.

“We’ve seen over the years that after a big storm where people lose power that there’s a big spike in the number of people that visit us for our resources,” Fearon said.

The library already experiences a spike in visitors every afternoon when students from nearby Pleasantville schools use the library as an after school destination. Fearon said the only issue for the library following a storm is a lack of parking. He said there was no need to increase the staff during these times.

“Everyone that comes here has a great deal of respect and it’s been great,” Fearon said. “I think it’s great that we are able to offer this service to the people in a time of need,”

Fearon said he anticipated that visitor levels would return to normal on Thursday or Friday as power is restored to many residents throughout the area.
