Metro-North Cites Millennials For Surge In Rail Ridership

Millennials who are packing Metro-North’s trains, especially during the weekend and off-peak hours, are apparently behind a growth spurt in rail ridership, according to a report by lohud.com.

Metro-North figures are showing an increase in non-work-related ridership that some are attributing to more millennials going into the city on weekends and during off-peak hours.

Members of this generation, born between 1982 and 1994, contributed to an increase in non-work-related ridership of 2.4 percent -- which works out to more than 850,000 trips, lohud.com’s story said.

Normal work day commuter ridership, in comparison, only rose by 1 percent in 2015, lohud reported, but neither increase seems to be related to gas prices, which are at their lowest since 2009.
