MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. As Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawthornes administrator Joan Stevens feels it is important that Christians celebrate one of the main messages that Jesus left for them.
The gifts that Jesus gave us by sacrificing himself and also forgiving us for our sins, I think this time of year its important for us to give back to him and to also give back to others in need, Stevens said.
During the holiday season, Stevens and members of Trinity Lutheran gave back by helping those in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Childrens toys and clothing were collected to give to the women incarcerated in the correctional facility for them to give to their children when they visit during the holiday season.
Stevens said that children are especially important at Trinity Lutheran during the holiday, and that the church holds a special childrens service on Christmas Eve to educate them on the birth of Jesus Christ. She added that in her 18 years at the church, children are her favorite part about this time of year.
The children when they come here during Christmas, their faces are just lit up and filled with joy, and I think thats special, Stevens said.
Father John Fraser, pastor at the Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne, said that Christmas is a time when all should be welcomed.
This time of year, its all about welcoming people and were geared toward helping people feel welcome, Fraser said.
Fraser said that during Christmas services at the church, many people will attend that are not regular members throughout the year. He said its in true Christmas spirit to accept those people as they would regulars.
The best part about Christmas is welcoming back families that come back to the church for the holiday and having them reach out to others in the church and celebrate the holiday together, Fraser said.
