MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. A new school year brings new beginnings and changes for students. For Mount Pleasant students, those changes may not just be new clothes. There have been some major structural changes at both Westlake and Pleasantville schools for this upcoming school year.
According to the Mount Pleasant Central School District, Westlake Middle School and High School will encompass a brand new feature that will greatly enhance their technological capabilities. This fall, the building that houses both the middle school and high school will have complete wireless capabilities. This will allow students to gain access to the internet from virtually anywhere in the school and give students the opportunity to use the internet without the need to access the school's computer lab.
At Pleasantville High School, many major structural changes were made to the building originally constructed in 1929.
"I always refer to the building as a grand old lady, and she needed a face lift," said Pleasantville Union Free School District Superintendent Mary Fox-Alter.
Some of the changes made to the high school for this fall at Pleasantville will be new art classrooms, a new chorus room, senior lounge, and also upgrades to the science lab rooms. Fox-Alter said she believes the students will appreciate the new changes.
"We will have spaces now that reflect the current and future learning needs of our students and we are excited," Fox-Alter said.
In addition to the changes inside the building, Pleasantville High School has also added what they call "Memorial Plaza". The plaza is a new courtyard outside the building where trees are planted in memory of former students that have passed away. Alumni can purchase engraved bricks to be placed within the courtyard and the school will hold a brick laying ceremony this October.
