VALHALLA, N.Y. - Hurricane Sandy hit the town of Mount Pleasant hard, officials said.
Several major roads across town were closed Tuesday due to downed trees and wires, and cleanup from Hurricane Sandy would be a lengthy process, Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Louis Alagno said Tuesday.
“I estimate a substantial amount of time - multiple days - before we’re back to normal here,” Alagno said.
More than 6,000 of the 8,000 ConEd customers in the town of Mount Pleasant were still without power Tuesday afternoon.
Thirteen houses were struck by falling trees overnight Monday in Mt. Pleasant, Alagno said, but no injuries were reported. Residents should assume that all downed wires are live and call the police headquarters at 914-769-1941 to report downed wires or trees.
The major roads that are closed include: Route 117 in Pleasantville, Route 448 in Pocantico Hills and Route 110 in Hawhtorne, as well as numerous smaller secondary roads.
Town Hall in Valhalla is open as a shelter for residents, and offers power, food and water, Alagno said.

I live right near the one house pictured above, with the two big fir trees hanging on it. Amazingly, the first tree fell and missed the car parked in the driveway. Neighbors advised the owner to move his car to the street. He did. Moments later, the second tree fell. Another amazing thing: The house still had power, the owner told me, just no cable. Wow!
