MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Mount Pleasant and Pleasantville officials want residents to be prepared for Hurricane Sandy's arrival.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for next week as Hurricane Sandy moves away from the Bahamas and parallels the East Coast this weekend. Sandy is expected to directly hit the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast Monday, with the tri-state area seeing heavy rainfall.

Residents are encouraged to call the Mount Pleasant Police Department at 914-769-1941or the Pleasantville Police Department at 914-769-1500 to report downed wires and trees or flooding. An emergency shelter is being set up at the Mount Pleasant Town Hall.

Pleasantville is asking residents to not put leaves or debris on their curbs ahead of Hurricane Sandy. Officials have posted safety recommendations for residents in case Sandy causes power outages or other emergencies. Officials recommend:

  • Stocking up on food and water for at least three days
  • Having a flashlight and battery-operated radio, as well as fresh batteries
  • Using the coldest setting on your refrigerator and freezer
  • Filling a bathtub and spare containers with water for residents who have a well and a water pump
  • Filling up your car's gas tank
  • Staying indoors during the storm and away from downed power lines
  • Developing a disaster plan with other family members
  • Packing a “go bag” in case of evacuation notice
