MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- Mount Pleasant police are warning residents of a phone scam in which callers impersonating IRS agents demand their victims pay them hundreds or thousands of dollars in cash or gift cards to avoid a lawsuit or seizure of assets.

Police remind citizens that the Internal Revenue Service will not telephone anyone looking for money or demand to be paid in cash or gift cards.

Those who receive such a call are asked to try to write down the caller’s phone number, then hang up and contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department at 914-769-1941.
