VALHALLA, N.Y. Mount Pleasant will honor all those who died in military service with two Memorial Day parades on Monday hosted by the Valhalla, Thornwood and Hawthorne American Legion posts.
Town Supervisor Joan Maybury said the parades are a great way to remember those who served this country and are no longer with us.
Its a wonderful opportunity to go out and remember those that have given their lives serving our country, Maybury said, who will be attending both parades on Monday. The Valhalla, Thornwood, and Hawthorne posts do a great job in honoring those individuals with dignity and respect.
The Valhalla American Legion Post 1038 will hold its parade Monday, starting at 9:30 a.m. The march will begin on Westlake Drive behind the Valhalla United Methodist Church and proceed to the Valhalla gazebo, arriving around 10:30 a.m. At the gazebo, various veterans from the Valhalla post will give speeches to commemorate the dead. Refreshments will then be served at the post at 27 Legion Drive in Valhalla.
The American Legion posts from both Thornwood and Hawthorne will hold a joint ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. The posts will march to the Thornwood Monuments area near the old Thornwood railroad station off Commerce Street. The ceremony will feature veterans from both posts. From there the group will march to the Thornwood Amercan Legion Gilbert Rauth Post at 52 Garrigan Ave. in Thornwood for refreshments.
Local establishments such as the Mount Pleasant Branch Library in Valhalla and the Mount Pleasant Public Library in Pleasantville as well as Town Hall will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
