Packed Crowd Gathers In Armonk For 'Frosty Day'

ARMONK, N.Y. -- Throngs of onlookers came to downtown Armonk on Saturday evening for the hamlet's annual "Frosty Day" celebration, an occasion that included a parade on Main Street and a holiday decorations lighting in Wampus Brook Park.

The celebration, which comes 65 years after the song "Frosty the Snowman" was written, is in honor of Frosty's local ties.

Steve Nelson, the songwriter who helped bring Frosty to the masses, was inspired by Armonk when he wrote about a village square in the song, according to an historical write up on Armonkfrosty.com, a site that chronicles his local ties.

Rain and dusk could not hamper turnout at the parade, as spectators gathered with umbrellas to watch a procession that featured several local organizations, which ranged from the Byram Hills PTSA, to Hickory & Tweed, to the North Castle Historical Society.

The parade marched north on Main Street before turning right on Maple Avenue and concluding at the park. Spectators then gathered at the park's rebuilt, which was recently rebuilt after the previous one was destroyed last year due to a collapse.

Once people gathered around the gazebo, they indulged in holiday carols, which as "Jingle Bells" and "The Dreidel Song."

Soon after, Frosty arrived on stage to cheers from the audience.

“Frosty rocks!” shouted a spectator.

“Frosty, I love you!” another onlooker shouted.

Charlene Decker and Linda Herbst, daughters of the late Mildred Wago, came on stage to read a crucial piece of local history. The daughters read a 1990s letter to Wago, who once served as the town of North Castle's receiver of taxes, from Audrey Nelson, the wife of Steve Nelson. In it, Audrey Nelson - she was referred to as "Frosty's Mama" - confirmed that the served as an inspiration for the character.

Wago's daughters announced that Audrey Nelson's letter would be donated to the town.

North Castle Deputy Supervisor Stephen D'Angelo, who thanked Decker and Herbst, read a town proclamation honoring Frosty for his 65th birthday. D'Angelo also praised the works who helped to rebuild the gazebo, which was only completed the previous Friday.

The celebration culminated with a lighting of the park's holiday decorations, which included a Christmas tree and menorah adjacent to the gazebo, along with snowflake lights.
