PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. A small sidewalk project in the village of Pleasantville may have a big impact for local commuters as it will permanently close the southbound entrance ramp to the Saw Mill River Parkway on Parkway Terrace.
This sidewalk will extend from Bedford Road to Manville Road on Parkway Terrace, Village Administrator Patti Dwyer said. But the other goal is to close off that ramp so theres less traffic impacting the small residential street and also for better traffic patterns on and off the parkway.
Residents still will be able to use the current southbound entrance ramp that goes toward Thornwood, however the new configuration will eliminate the triangle-shaped traffic pattern. Traffic currently can flow onto the ramp from Manville and Parkway. In the new pattern, drivers only will be able to utilize the ramp from Manville Road. Dwyer said the village received a grant in 2009-10 from Westchester County to add the sidewalk for an amount of $100,000, in which the village would match up to $27,000. Dwyer said the project was put on hold in order to receive permits to close the ramp. Earlier last week, the board of trustees passed a resolution to extend the contact of the grant.
According to Dwyer, many residents in the village have complained about the danger of the Parkway Terrace entrance ramp due to the two roads flowing into the one-lane ramp, dating back to the late 1990s.
It goes pretty far back, Dwyer said. The problem is that when people get on at Parkway Terrace its a real hard right-hand turn and theres people flying in from Manville Road also that are trying to pick up speed to get on the highway.
Dwyer said the village currently is receiving bids to construct the sidewalk and it hopes the project will commence in late spring.
