When complete, the twin Hudson River span will contain 31 miles of girders, weighing a total of 100,000 tons, according to newnybridge.com.

Construction workers have started to build a maintenance dock for the New York State Thruway Authority, also on the West end of the span.

Traffic noise barriers are going up along southbound I-87/I-287 in South Nyack.

Crews will be digging up the soil in preparation for the barriers’ foundations between the South Broadway bridge and River Road.

Tappan Zee Constructors will continue building foundation walls for the highway and shared-use path along the northbound Thruway in South Nyack.

While work continues above, the Coast Guard has taken steps to protect boaters on the river below.

Marine units are patrolling the construction zone and safety zone -- which ban unauthorized vessels -- has been established around construction barge mooring sites, bridge piers and abutments, and the massive “I Lift NY” crane.

Marine units will be enforcing the rules of the expanded “Regulated Navigation Areas” east and west of the “Safety Zone.” They stretch 500 yards north and 500 yards south of the existing bridge.

Violators of the rules or zones may face fines and criminal prosecution.
