Top Photos of 2011 in Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Over the past year, The Daily Mount Pleasant received many great photographs to run with our stories, both from our reporters and readers.  This is a list of the top five photos of 2011 that accented the articles for which they were associated with.  All photos can be viewed in the photo gallery option below.

5)  DJ Henry one year anniversary ceremony- The photograph, provided by Pace University, shows flags that were placed on campus in October in memory of DJ Henry.  Henry, a former Pace student and football player, was tragically shot and killed in October of 2010 by a Pleasantville police officer.  The flags were place for the one year anniversary of this tragedy and display “#12”, Henry’s number on the football team.

4)  Nurses Rally at the Westchester Medical Center- In November, the nurses at the Westchester Medical Center held a rally against the proposed cuts by the center to eliminate 250 nursing positions.  In this photo, captured by reporter Robert Michelin, the nurses are seen rallying around a large inflatable rat.  On the rat’s stomach is a sign reading, “Michael Israel”.  Israel is the CEO of the medical center.

3)  Flooded yard on Whittier Drive- Multiple residents that live on Whittier Drive in Thornwood experienced mass flooding in their yards and basements during rain storms throughout the summer months.  In this photo, provided by resident Sue Cusma, her entire backyard is flooded with multiple feet water following a rain storm.  The photo on the right shows what Cusma’s yard looks like on a normal day.  The kicker: at the time that the photo of her flooded yard was taken, Cusma’s pool was empty and the water that occupied her yard completely refilled it.

2)  Saw Mill River Parkway Flooded-  During tropical storm Irene, many major roadways throughout Westchester were closed due to flooding.  The Saw Mill River Parkway, notorious for flooding during rain storms, was one of them.  This photo, taken by reporter Danny LoPriore from an overpass, shows the parkway completely engulfed in water following Irene.

1)  Water aisle completely barren- In anticipation of Hurricane Irene, many residents in Mount Pleasant took to local stores in hopes of stocking up on emergency items should they lose power during the storm.  Those that visited the A&P in Thornwood might not have been able to buy bottled water as the store was completely sold out of all water by midafternoon of the day before the storm. This photo, taken by Robert Michelin, shows the long line of empty water shelves.
