Two years after the tragic death of Pace University student DJ Henry, many new developments occurred throughout 2012 in regard to what happened on that fatal night in October 2010.
On Oct. 17, 2010, Henry was fatally shot through his car windshield by Pleasantville Police Officer Aaron Hess after Henry struck Hess with his vehicle in the parking lot of a Thornwood shopping center. A toxicology report released shortly after the incident showed that Henry was intoxicated.
The incident left many questions unanswered about what happened that night. In March of this year, Michael Sussman, the lawyer representing Henry's family, released an abundance of evidence to the public, including sworn statements, audio clips and video footage. The evidence showed a chaotic crime scene in which several minutes went by before Henry received medical attention.
In the midst of controversy surrounding Henry's death, Pace University dedicated a clock tower on campus in his memory in late March.
After the release of evidence, the legal battle between Henry's family and Hess, the Village of Pleasantville and the Pleasantville Police Department continued in 2012. Sussman released transcripts of sworn depositions that showed conflicting stories about what happened just before Hess fired his weapon at Henry's car.
The civil battle continues, and most recently, the Henry family filed a lawsuit against the Town of Mount Pleasant as well as Pleasantville Police Officer Kevin Gilmartin and Mount Pleasant Police Officer Ronald Gagnon. The lawsuit alleges that Henry received a lack of medical attention directly after he was shot.
