Town Board Members Sworn in, Optimistic on Future

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Three members of the Mount Pleasant Town Board, including Town Supervisor Joan Maybury, were sworn in for their respective positions Tuesday evening at Town Hall in Valhalla.

Maybury said it was a privilege to continue working with the returning members of the board.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to continue working together and we hope to continue to do great things for this town,” Maybury said.

Maybury was sworn in after handily defeating challenger Richard Gagliardi 3-to-1 in the November election.  It was the first contested election for town supervisor in Mount Pleasant in many years as Maybury took over for longtime supervisor Robert Meehan in January of 2010.  Meehan served as supervisor since 1990, before being named Westchester County Attorney.  Town Council member Carl Fulgenzi and Mark Rubeo were also re-sworn into their seats on the board after a contested election.  The two defeated challenger Jane Abbate, a member of the Mount Pleasant Architectural Review Board.

Maybury said she was excited to improve Mount Pleasant’s business presence in the upcoming year with the addition of a Walgreen’s in Thornwood and a café in the Hawthorne train station.  She said she believes that retaining board members such as Fulgenzi and Rubeo will bring valued experience to the town in the years going forward.

“We as a board need to continue to do more with less and yet I think we have a lot of improvements coming to the town in the near future,” Maybury said.  “This past year was tough with mandates and issues that arose from storms but we learned from it and we’re optimistic that we can do the best with what we have going forward.”

The Mount Pleasant Supervisor is a full time position on a two-year term.  Council members are part-time positions that are sworn in for four-year terms.

Town Clerk Patricia June Scova and Highway Superintendent Peter Sciliano were also sworn into their positions Tuesday evening after being reelected in November in uncontested elections.
