U.S. Census Says Mount Pleasant Population Increases Slightly

VALHALLA, N.Y. – About 143 new residents moved in to Thornwood, Valhalla, and Hawthorne during the time period from April 2010 to July 2011, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Mount Pleasant Town Clerk Patricia June Scova says that the small number relates directly to the town’s residential development.

“The number seems a little small,” said Scova. “But there’s not a lot of land in Mount Pleasant for people to develop.”

“It’s usually a fairly steady small growth because some people move in, and at the same time some people move out,” Scova said.

The spike in Mount Pleasant is about a fifth of the growth that occurred in the town of Greenburgh. Greenburgh saw a population growth of 524 residents during the same time period, the second biggest growth in Westchester County after the city of Yonkers.

The 2011 population estimates released by the Census Bureau are used as a benchmark for growth.

“These estimates provide our first look at how much the total population has changed in each of our nation's cities since we conducted the 2010 Census,” Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said in a news release.

As a whole, Westchester’s population is estimated to have risen just more than 5,000, bringing the total to 955,899. The increase would continue a recent trend of a rising population in the past decade for the county. Between 2002-10, the population has increased by more than 14,000, reports show.

On a larger scale, the data shows New York City grew by more than 70,000 people since the 2010 Census, more than any other city in the country. New York also continued to be the nation's most populous city by a large margin, with 8.2 million residents in 2011, followed by Los Angeles and Chicago.
