The total cost is projected to be $2,275,966. As the district has approximately $750,966 left in the reserve established in 2010, it is seeking approval to borrow $1,525,000 which will be paid back over 10 years.

The district is legally required to refurbish Briarcliff Middle/High School's practice field, costing approximately $2,032,626. To complete this task, the district must also purchase 1.82 acres of adjacent land for an additional $25,000.

Additional work consists of asbestos removal from pipes in a large crawlspace, estimated at $218,340. The price includes re-insulating the pipes with non-asbestos materials.

If the proposed bond is not approved by the community, the district will still have to undertake the work and fund the entire $1,525,000 out of the 2014-15 school budget.

The Board of Education believes that bonding for this capital project is the most fiscally responsible way to fund the mandatory work.

Applying reserve monies to significantly offset the cost, borrowing the rest, and paying over time allows the district to complete these projects while continuing to provide a full complement of academic and co-curricular programs.

Residents can bring any questions or concerns to a board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The vote will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Todd Elementary School from 6 a.m. to  9 p.m.
