Carmela Marie Halliday, 87, Former Valhalla Resident

BRANT LAKE, N.Y. - Carmela Marie (Portanova) Halliday of Brank Lake, formerly of West Harrison and Valhalla, died Nov. 22. She was 87.

Halliday was born Aug. 31, 1927, in Guardia Lombardi, Italy, to Grazia (Iuni) and Leone Portanova. Upon arriving in the U.S., she lived in Silver Lake (West Harrison). She worked for N.Y. Telephone Co. After raising a family, she opened Carvel Ice Cream Store in Larchmont with her sister Ellen. She was active in the Board of Elections and the Valhalla Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary. In retirement, she and her husband moved to Brant Lake. There she volunteered at the local school and library and was active in the local historical society.

Halliday is survived by her daughter, Liane (Terry) Doss of North Carolina; son, Jon (Sheryl) Halliday of Valhalla; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Albert (Doc) Halliday; brothers, Rocco and Armando; and sister, Ellen Portanova.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Dec. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla. She will buried besides her husband at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Humane Society of the United States.
