Leo P. Cooley, 77, Of Valhalla

VALHALLA, N.Y. – Leo Patrick Cooley, 77, of Valhalla, died Tuesday, Aug. 25.

The eldest son of the late Leo and Alice Cooley, he was born July 20, 1938, in Flushing, New York.

He graduated from St. Augustine High School in Brooklyn, in 1956, and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Fordham University in 1960. He completed his doctorate in English and Irish literature at New York University in 1969.

During his 45 years at Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, he taught Modern British and Irish literature as well as creative writing.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Cooley; three children, Stephen Leo Cooley, Ellen Dierdre Cooley and Lawrence Sebastian Cooley; a granddaughter; three brothers; and one sister.

Viewing hours will take place Friday, from 5-9 p.m. at Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 W. Stevens Ave.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, at 10 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla. Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York.
