Lillian Winzig Windsor, 90, Was Hawthorne Opera Singer And Deli Owner

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. – Lillian Winzig Windsor, a Hawthorne resident who had an illustrious career traveling the world as as opera singer before coming back home to work at the family delicatessen, died May 19. She was 90.

Born in 1923 in Hawthorne, Windsor began singing as a child and eventually trained at the Berlitz Language School, where she learned language skills in French and Italian and honed her enunciation and projection skills. During her 18-year career as an opera singer, Windsor sang all over the world in places such as Carnegie Hall and the Rome Opera and met the Pope twice. She served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the State Department between 1944 and 1962.

Windsor returned to Hawthorne in 1962 to help at the Winzig Delicatessen, where she would entertain customers with her voice. She continued working at the store until its 95th anniversary in 2010.

Windsor is survived by her nephews Teddy, Tommy, Richard and Michael Winzig, Kenneth and Fred Bleakly, neice Veronica Bleakley Steffen, many grandnieces and nephews, and their children.

A mass of Christian burial took place at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, where she is interred.

Donations may be made to the Rosary Hill Home, Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester or Elmsford Animal Shelter in her name.
