Lloyd Bedford Cox Jr., Bedford Insurance Brokerage Firm President, 85

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Lloyd Bedford Cox Jr., 85, a former longtime resident of Bedford and retired president of the Lloyd Bedford Cox Inc. insurance brokerage firm, died on Saturday, May 2 in Redding, Conn.

Cox was born on Feb. 15, 1930, the son of Lloyd Bedford Cox, Sr. and Martha Hoyt Cox of Bedford Hills. He married Eleanor Jeffers Cox on August 10, 1957 in Syracuse. They moved from Bedford to Redding, Conn., in 2008. Cox graduated from Bedford Hills High School and from St. Lawrence University in 1952. He joined his father at Lloyd Bedford Cox, Inc., now a third generation firm in Bedford Hills and New York City, and retired as its president in 2000.

Cox served as president of Bedford Hills Lions Club, Bedford Hills Chamber of Commerce and the Insurance Agents of Westchester County.  He was a trustee of John Jay Homestead, president of the Bedford Historical Society, chairman of the 1987 Bedford Court House Celebration, vice chairman of the 1980 Bedford Tri-Centennial and chairman of the Town of Bedford Board of Assessment Review. He was an Elder in Bedford Presbyterian Church, a founder of Northern Westchester Shelter for Domestic Violence, a member of Random Choristers II, St. Matthew's Church, Bedford Golf and Tennis Club and Chowder and Marching Club.  Cox is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Redding, Conn.; a sister, Martha C. Wright of Basking Ridge, N.J.; a daughter, Betsy Murphy (Paul) of Long Valley, N.J.; two sons, Lloyd Cox, III (Tori) of Katonah and J. Jeffers Cox (Mary) of Bedford; four grandchildren, Brian and Sarah Cox of Bedford and Dylan and Tyler Cox of Katonah. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at St. Matthew's Church in Bedford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Friends of John Jay Homestead, Katonah, N.Y. 10536, Bedford Historical Society, Bedford, N.Y. 10506 or to the Lloyd B. and Eleanor J. Cox, Jr. Endowed Scholarship at St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y. 13617.
