A battalion chief, Fahy, came from a family dedicated to the department with his father serving 33 years with the department, fighting fire after fire to become a battalion chief himself, before retiring in 2001, said the New York Post.

Firefighters at his firehouse at 2175 Walton Ave. planned to honor Fahy Wednesday morning with a special ceremony, according to the New York Daily News. Officials with the department said funereal service plans will be announced later on Wednesday.

"Rest in Peace, Yonkers resident Michael Fahy, who tragically lost his life protecting NYC with the FDNY. Keep his family in your prayers," said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

The dedicated firefighter and family man joined the department in 1999 and climbed the ladder rapidly, becoming a lieutenant in 2004, captain in 2007 and was named the Battalion 19 chief in 2012. His death, makes him the highest ranking fire official to die on duty since Sept. 11, added the New York Post.

“Our entire city is deeply saddened by the passing of a true hero - Battalion Chief Michael J. Fahy," said Mayor de Blasio on the FDNY website. "He was an outstanding Firefighter, a devoted father of three and he came from a family who exemplified what it means to bravely serve others. His sacrifice is yet another example of the courage and commitment that defines each member of the FDNY."

Fahy leaves behind his wife Fiona Fahy; two sons, Michael, 11, Cormac, 6, and a daughter, Anna Elisabeth, 8.

He was described by neighbors as a wonderful father who coached basketball and baseball for the Catholic Youth Organization at The Annunciation School, where his children attended school, said the New York Daily News.

The FDNY Foundation has set up an online donation page to raise funds for the family. To donate, click here and then select the "Chief Michael J. Fahy Children's Educational Fund" in the drop down option that says "General Support."

“Today is a sad day for the entire FDNY family. We lost a rising star in our Department, a Chief who exuded leadership and inspired confidence in the members in his command," said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, who served with Fahy's father. "Chief Fahy bravely served the city for 17 years, following in the footsteps of his father, Thomas J. Fahy, also a Battalion Chief. His death is a painful reminder of the sacrifice our job all too often demands."
