William B. Oakes, Jr., 80, Of Hawthorne, Air Force Veteran

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. - William B. Oakes, Jr. (Bill) of Hawthorne died Sept.13. He was 80.

Oakes was born in Queens, raised in Boiceville and Scarsdale. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He founded the Catholic Widows and Widowers Club, which operated in many parishes in New York and Connecticut. He was active in Boy Scouts, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus and American Legion.

Oakes is survived by his wife, Marie Harley-Oakes; children, Nancy J. Oakes, William B. Oakes III and John Oakes; stepchildren, Dan Harley and Sally Silvestro; five grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Naunheim Oakes; and brothers, James A. Oakes and Thomas J. Oakes.

Calling hours are Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hawthorne Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne. Interment at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
