More than 50 people have been displaced by a fast-moving, four-alarm fire that ripped through a Yonkers apartment building and damaged two others.

The fire started around 5:20 a.m. Monday at 42 Oak St., according to Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Fitzpatrick.

More than 80 firefighters from 18 companies battled the blaze that jumped from one building to the other, Fitzpatrick said.

"The fire had a pretty good head start on us by the time we arrived," he said.

Several residents received minor burns and several firefighters received minor injuries, he said.

Firefighters are still on the scene working hot spots, Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick said the Yonkers Building Department will have to make a determination on to whether it's safe to go inside.

Oak Street is closed between Yonkers Avenue and Elm Street, and streets are partially closed on Chestnut Street, Riverview Place, Linden Street, Elm Street and Victor Street, according to the Yonkers Police.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

Yonkers Emergency Management, along with officials from the American Red Cross will open an emergency center for displaced residents at the Nodine Community Center, Fitzpatrick said.

Mutal aid was provided by several departments including New Rochelle, Greenburgh, Mount Vernon, Eastchester and Hartsdale fire departments.
